At a glance

Every figure on this page comes from the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission. The money is quarterly, and the newest quarter it has published is stated in the notice above — read that before reading these tiles.

Where the market is heading

The CRC publishes medicinal sales and recreational sales as separate columns and their sum as a third. This line is that sum — and the printed total is used as a check on it rather than as its source, and a residual in either direction refuses the run rather than reaching this page.

Total cannabis sales, by quarter

Quarters, and quarters only. New Jersey publishes no monthly sales figure in any artifact this pipeline reads — the board-meeting decks were checked and carry none. Spreading a quarter across its months would be inventing data, so this page does not do it and New Jersey sits out every monthly cross-state chart with the grain given as the reason.

Published quarters get revised. The CRC's own footnote allows an update to a prior quarter's report, and the archived editions show it happening. Rows are upserted rather than appended, so a figure here can differ from one read a year ago; the measured changes are listed in the state file.

Who is buying

A genuine two-channel split, published by the regulator as two separate columns rather than derived from a licence attribute or inferred from a tax exemption. Medicinal sales predate this series; recreational retail opens partway through it, and every quarter before that opening is drawn as a declared gap rather than as a zero.

What the state collects

Two different levies, published in the same table as the sales figures. Recreational Tax Revenue sits beside Recreational Sales but is not a fixed share of it, and the CRC states no rate for either levy — so neither is used here to derive or to check a sales figure, and no statutory rate is asserted.

Cannabis levies, by quarter

What the fee is levied on is not stated. The CRC prints the Social Equity Excise Fee column without saying what it is charged on or at what rate. It is carried as its own field with its own label, and it is not folded into the sales headline.

The medicinal programmemonthly

This is the one New Jersey series that keeps pace. It comes from a different artifact on a different clock: a monthly PDF at a fixed address, overwritten in place, with counts taken on the fifteenth of each month. It is a point-in-time stock of people currently registered, not a running total of everyone who ever registered, and it shares a cross-state axis only with another state whose measure is also a stock.

Registered medicinal patients, by month

The count falls, and that is the programme working as designed. Patients migrating to recreational retail leave the medicinal register, so a declining line here is not a collector fault. The direction and the size of the fall are measured from the series itself and stated in the field note.

No version history exists at source. The patient PDF lives at one address and is overwritten each month, so a month that is not archived on the day it is published is gone. Every pull is archived by this pipeline for that reason.

Where these figures come from

Sourcing, basis and comparability

One agency publishes everything on this page. The CRC reports sales by calendar quarter in a slide-export PDF, the registered medicinal patient count monthly, and licence awards as a running snapshot on its reports index. Grain is a property of the field here, not of the state: the sales figures are quarterly and reach only as far as 2025-Q4, which ended 2025-12-31, while the patient count is monthly and current to 2026-08.

Why an axis above reads unstated: Checked at build time, not narrated. The extracted text of the fourteen editions with a readable table was searched for tax, gross, net, discount, exclud, includ, wholesale, retail, method, defin. Nine of the ten terms return nothing at all, and what the rest return lands on three distinct lines, “Sales Sales Tax Revenue Excise Fees”, “Sales Tax Revenue”, “Sales Tax Revenue Excise Fees”. The only prose the CRC prints anywhere is its revision footnote - “*Some data may have been updated to reflect funds collected after a prior quarter’s report” on the current editions and “*Numbers may change after Treasury certification due to late reporting from operators.” on the older ones - so nothing states whether the sales figures are gross or net of discounts, whether they include sales tax, or whether they are retail only, and three axes are unstated. This search runs on every build, so if the CRC ever publishes a methodology the sentence moves with it. An undocumented basis is a gap to be labelled, never filled in with the most likely answer.

Why an axis above reads unstated: The patient PDF carries exactly one note, “*Please note all numbers as of the 15th of the month”, and no other prose at all. It does not say whether the count is of patients resident in New Jersey, nor whether out-of-state registrations are included, so scope is unstated rather than assumed statewide-resident. An undocumented basis is a gap to be labelled, never filled in with the most likely answer.

Why an axis above reads unstated: The index heading gives the as-of date and nothing else. It does not say whether a surrendered or expired award is removed from the running total, so these are awards issued to a date and not a count of licences currently active; scope is unstated on that axis. An undocumented basis is a gap to be labelled, never filled in with the most likely answer.

Why each marker above says what it says
How this state compares with the others
MetricMarkerWhy
Retail salesPartly comparableNew Jersey reports sales by calendar quarter, so it is on the quarterly view and absent from every monthly one; DECISIONS Q4 forbids interpolating a quarter into months. The CRC states no methodology, so the money, tax and scope axes are unstated rather than assumed. The newest published quarter is 2025-Q4, which ended 2025-12-31.
Medical / adult-use splitPartly comparableA genuine two-channel split, published as two separate columns by the regulator rather than derived from a licence attribute or a tax proxy. New Jersey reports sales by calendar quarter, so it is on the quarterly view and absent from every monthly one; DECISIONS Q4 forbids interpolating a quarter into months. Recreational sales open at 2022-Q2 and every earlier quarter is a declared gap, not a zero.
Price per gramNot like-for-likeNo quantity is published in any New Jersey artifact, so no price per gram can be derived and none is estimated.
Per capitaPartly comparablePer-capita inherits every flag on its numerator, so the unstated money, tax and scope axes travel with it. New Jersey reports sales by calendar quarter, so it is on the quarterly view and absent from every monthly one; DECISIONS Q4 forbids interpolating a quarter into months. The newest published quarter is 2025-Q4, which ended 2025-12-31.
Patient countsPartly comparableA point-in-time stock of registered medicinal patients, taken on the 15th of each month. It shares an axis only with another state whose measure is also an active stock - never with a cumulative registration count.
Licence countsPartly comparableAwards issued to a stated date, not licences currently active: the index does not say whether a surrendered award leaves the running total. The microbusiness row cuts across the classes rather than adding to them.
Tax revenuePartly comparableTwo different levies are published: recreational tax revenue and a social equity excise fee. The CRC states no base for either, so the base is recorded as mixed rather than named. New Jersey reports sales by calendar quarter, so it is on the quarterly view and absent from every monthly one; DECISIONS Q4 forbids interpolating a quarter into months.

Medicinal plus recreational must equal the published Total: fifteen of the sixteen rows of the 2025-Q4 edition carry the three figures; the other row (2022-Q1) prints the recreational column as a placeholder, so it is excluded rather than checked against a zero that would reduce the identity to medicinal == total.identityPASS — largest residual $0 across fifteen rows of the 2025-Q4 edition.
Each year page's TOTALS row must equal the sum of its quarter rows, in each of the 5 columns. This is also the check that confirms an unreadable row label was resolved to the right quarter.identityPASS — largest residual $0 across 20 checks.
Each licence tier's class rows must sum to the tier total the index prints.identityThe index publishes three licence tiers, each broken out by class. The class rows sum to their own tier total exactly (largest residual 0), but Microbusinesses is a CUT ACROSS those classes rather than another class: adding it in overshoots the published totals by 869 licence(s). This page sums the classes and never adds the microbusiness row to them.
The reports index prints a headline patient total with its own as-of date, written separately from the monthly PDF.cross source reconciliationPASS — the index reports 43,690 as of 2026-08-15 and the PDF's 2026-08 row reads the same.
Whether the CRC's sales dollars reconcile against any independent measure.uncheckedNot cross-checked. Nothing to check them against. New Jersey publishes no seed-to-sale extract, no per-licensee file and no open-data asset, and the tax column in the same table is not a fixed fraction of sales, so it cannot stand in as an independent decomposition. DC's headline is over-determined by two in-document identities; New Jersey's is confirmed only by its own row and column sums, which is a weaker claim and is stated as one.

Revisions are real and measured, not anticipated: 28 cell(s) across 8 quarter(s) and 4 field(s) changed between consecutive editions in the mirror, 21 upward and 7 downward. The largest is $16,368,552 on 2024-Q1 sales_recreational, which moved up between the 2024-Q1 and 2024-Q2 editions - 8.14% of the earlier figure. Rows are upserted; an append-only loader would have frozen every one of those. — Measured across the fourteen editions with a readable table

Open questions on this data

Unresolved definitional questions that gate something. Listed because a question nobody can see is a question nobody closes.

  • Do the CRC's Medicinal Sales and Recreational Sales columns count retail dollars only, or do they include wholesale transfers between licensees? Closing it needs: Email the CRC's data contact, or find a methodology statement outside the slide-export PDFs.
  • Does the CRC commit to a publication date for a quarterly sales report? Closing it needs: Ask the CRC directly; a committed schedule would let the staleness thresholds be derived from a promise rather than from an observed distribution.
  • What is the Social Equity Excise Fee levied on? Closing it needs: Find a CRC or Treasury statement of the fee's base and rate; until then tax_revenue declares tax_base `mixed`.
